Hope Baskets: This program directly supports new families in the hospitals. News of a baby with Down syndrome brings many emotions. We have experienced a range of emotions and have collective experience to help new families. We are optimistic and hopeful as we greet parents. We listen and share information.

Our Hope Baskets are delivered to families in the hospital, as requested by the parent and social worker involved. The parents receive pajamas for their new baby, a calendar of “Beautiful Faces, Life with Down Syndrome” (Donated by Band of Angels), children’s books, and flowers for mom.

Members of our group speak English and Spanish in hopes of reaching out to a greater community. Parents are invited to participate in ongoing support group events, and we call, and email, with personal invitations and to stay connected.

Buddy Walk:
The Sonoma County Down Syndrome Support Group is not a nonprofit. We joined forces with Becoming Independent, a nonprofit with a 501(c)(3) tax status, to host our first annual Buddy Walk in 2005. The event had 615 participants enjoying a one-mile walk at Howarth Park, a Resource Fair of non profits, a BBQ lunch, and our famous Talent Show performed by our wonderful teens and young adults with Down syndrome. Get information about this year's Buddy Walk.

Support Group Family Gatherings:
We celebrate families by pot lucking and visiting during the annual Christmas Party and Summer Picnic. Families stay connected and siblings share fun-filled activities together.

Monthly Parent Connection:
This is a developing program designed for families of children with Down syndrome, ages 0 – 5 years old. We meet at Becoming Independent on the third Friday of every month from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. The purpose of this activity is to provide a forum where families can meet each other, spend time learning together, as well as find support in each other’s wisdom and strength. Many tips and “how to’s” are communicated while forming friendships during this time.

“Teen to Twenties-Something” Dance:
We support socialization for young people with Down syndrome. An informal dinner and dance, hosted by D.J. Rosie, will guarantee a fun time for all. Family members are welcome to serve food and support teens. A nominal fee of $10.00 is requested.

Mom’s Night Out
: Once in a while moms need to get away from everything at home to socialize and relax. We choose a restaurant where we can have dinner with new and old friends. Great ideas flow, friendships are rekindled, and lots of laughs are inevitable.

Friends and Family Bowling Party:
This is for all families and friends who enjoy bowling. These Saturday afternoons are a great way to exercise and have fun. Bowling events take place throughout the year.
