We would like to introduce you to Sonoma County Down Syndrome Support and explain our services to the community.
Our group was organized in 1992, by Gloria Huerta, to connect with other parents and people with Down syndrome.
We are comprised of approximately 65 families, parents, siblings, and grandparents of people with Down syndrome.
We act as individuals and as a group to lend support and share experience with one another regarding Down syndrome.
As a result of our first annual Buddy Walk in October, 2005, we raised $21,000 to support advocacy, education, and community for people with Down syndrome.
Since then, we have donated 20% of our net profit to the National Down Syndrome Society and become Affiliates, taking responsibility to organize and support many programs locally.
What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome (also Down's syndrome) or trisomy 21 is a genetic condition resulting from the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. Down syndrome is characterized by a combination of major and minor abnormalities of body structure and function. Among features present in nearly all cases are impairment of learning and physical growth, and a recognizable facial appearance usually identified at birth. Many other organ systems may be affected, as well. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British doctor who first described it in 1866.
